Good navigation across open country is required from the beginning of the this section. From Hartside Cross the route heads up Hartside Height and onto Black Fell, Tom Smith’s Stone, Butt Hill, Three Pikes, Great Blacklaw Hill and Cold Hill to Howgill. From here the route is back on footpaths and roads. It continues by heading into Hallbankgate then onto Stoop Rigg, Low Burnfoot, Featherstone Rowfoot, Park Village and Haltwhistle – the last town before the end of the route. Leaving towards Hollincrag the route passes Melkridge Tilery, Cranberry Brow and Vidolanda Roman Fort. It then passes Chesterholm, heads alongside Barcombe, then turns towards East Crindledykes and across the B6318 to the end of the Pennine Odyssey at Housesteads, Vercovicivm Roman Fort.
